This post on our blog is a reflection of our first 2 years in business at Mega Tan. Two years ago Pam and I sat down with Shawn Spishak and Michelle Wilhelm and talked about buying Mega Tan on Richfield Road. We were in discussions with Dave and Julie Gould who wanted to sell and retire to Texas and they made us an offer we just couldn't refuse. I remember sitting in our living room talking about should we or shouldn't we do this deal and Pam said YOLO, you only live once, let's do it! It was at this point that we decided to partner up and buy the business. Pam agreed that she would leave her job at the bowling alley to run the business and Shawn and I would continue with our normal day jobs and Michelle would help out when needed. I also remember thinking what are we going to do if this business doesn't work out, we could lose everything that we worked so hard for throughout our 20 years of marriage. Then the thoughts turned to, we will not let this business fail, we will work as hard as we have to and make sure this business is successful. With the help of Dave and Julie Gould, the transition was seamless, Julie stayed on and trained Pam for a few months after we bought the business and thankfully Julie had great employees who decided to stay with us (Samantha March and Britnay Taljonick). These girls helped us so much and continue to help us make sure the salon continues to run smooth every day. Once we officially bought the business my thoughts turned to what are we going to do with the other half of the building that used to be Gould Electric, I tried advertising office space available and ended up calling Angie Ridley who owns Complete Realty. I asked Angie if she could list the office space and try to find a business to rent the space for possibly and electrical company or a heating and cooling business. Angie came to the building and after looking at it said: "I want to rent this office". I was ecstatic and Shawn agree that this was the best fit for the office space. Angie moved her entire Complete Realty business into the office about 6 months after we bought the building. Angie has been nothing but a blessing for us and hopefully a partner that we can continue with for years to come.
As for the tanning salon, it has turned out to be an awesome experience that our entire family loves. Pam works at the salon almost every day. Lindsey who is now a Junior in college works at the salon and helps Pam out when needed and our youngest daughter Hannah who is a Junior in high school works some part time when school and sports allow it. We still have Samantha March working as much as she can as she is also going to college full time. Sam has been our rock at the salon as she understands how the entire salon works and sometimes still teaches us things. Britnay Taljonick is also still working for us, she recently decided to try something new that didn't work out and we gladly asked her back to help us out. She has also been a great employee, helping out whenever needed. We recently hired a few part time helpers in Brooke McGlone who works when she is available, but she is trying to go to school and work at Menards full time so she is very busy, we are happy to have her help when we can get it. We also have Shawn's son Austin Spishak working part time at the salon now, he is also working at Richfield Bowl and Grand Blanc Lanes and is a Senior at Davison High School.
I am also thankful for my partner in this business Shawn Spishak who has his other business (Retail Finishes) to run. Shawn helps out when asked and is great for any construction jobs that we need done at the salon and his main man Gary VanFossen who has helped out a lot at the salon the last few years.
As I look back on the last 2 years I must say, it is amazing that 2 years have gone by already, it seems like it has only been a few months since we bought the business. I don't mind doing the maintenance at the salon, it is part of why we bought the place. I get to tear apart the beds and hexes and clean them, change the bulbs, fix the wiring and whatever else needs to get done to make sure the business runs smooth.
We are very blessed that the community supports us in our dream of owning a business and we will always remain thankful for each and every customer that we have. Owning a business is not what everyone thinks it is, it can be stressful, scary and a lot of work, but if you treat it right, it can be very rewarding.
We hope that you will continue to support us as we get ready to celebrate our 2nd year in business and the 10th year that Mega Tan has been in business. We have our annual anniversary sale coming up in a few weeks and would love for you to come do your Christmas shopping with us.
Thanks for reading, leave us a message on our Blog and let us know if you want to read some more, I don't mind writing and hope it is entertaining for you. Have a great day!
